Phil Burdes

Phil has been a primary school teacher for over 17 years, predominantly teaching in Key Stage 2. Throughout his career, he has loved seeing children discover what they are capable of and is passionate about creating environments where children feel confident to explore, take risks, solve problems and, most importantly, have fun!

An active and outdoorsy person, Phil swims regularly with a club. Although he has retired from competitive swimming, he still loves the training, challenge and sense of achievement it brings. He also enjoys walking, gardening, cooking and getting lost in a good science fiction or fantasy book.

Some of Phil’s happiest childhood memories are of being outside and playing with friends — climbing trees, building dens, camping and riding bikes with no particular plan other than seeing where the adventure would take them! These experiences taught him so much about independence, creativity, resilience and friendship and have helped shape his belief in the importance of giving children the freedom, space and time to play.

As his school’s OPAL Curriculum Lead, Phil has loved seeing the incredible impact OPAL has had. Watching children develop new skills, grow in confidence, overcome challenges and become completely absorbed in their play has been incredibly rewarding. He is excited to share his passion for play and help other schools discover just how powerful, joyful and transformative play can be.
