So, what's the OPAL
programme about?

Action planning

School improvement practice

Self-evaluation

Change management

Quality of play

Playwork skills

Sustainable change

Action research

Improve wellbeing

It is a mentor-supported school improvement programme addressing all 18 areas a school must plan for if they want to sustainably improve the quality of play.

The OPAL Primary Programme blends elements of strategic school improvement practice, action planning, self-evaluation, playwork skills and knowledge, and 20 years of action-research.

Improve Behaviour

When children's fundamental needs are not met, their behaviour suffers. OPAL schools meet their play needs, resulting in a huge reduction in playtime and post-playtime behaviour issues.

Save time and money

By reducing problems arising from poor playtimes, schools are recovering around 30 hours teaching time per year and senior leaders around 80 hours of leadership time.

Improve well-being

Research shows clearly that OPAL improves children's happiness and wellbeing and 99.3% of parents' support the OPAL's vision.

Develop skills

If your playtimes look like a rich laboratory of creative expression, where every child is supported by knowledgeable staff to endlessly create and challenge themselves, you probably don't need us. If not then get in touch.

What is the timeline to complete the programme?

During the programme, your OPAL mentor will support your school over an 18 to 24 month period to bring about an entire cultural and practical transformation of the way that play is thought about, planned for, resourced and staffed.

“It was an absolute joy and a privilege to hear from the children, the school staff and the parents and carers the difference that it has made – in terms of everyone’s wellbeing, improved attendance and improved relationships."

Claire Sheils

Director of Children's Services, North Somerset Council

“On re-inspection, we moved from Grade 4 (RI) to Grade 1 (Outstanding) in Behaviour and Safety at the Junior School. We would never have what we have now if it weren’t for the involvement of OPAL !"

Clare Fletcher

Headteacher

“Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us throughout the project. Staff are delighted that all their efforts have resulted in the Platinum award but much, much more than that - all staff are happy that children are enjoying playing outside and are gaining so many important skills."
